Orthodontics is a dental specialty that studies, prevents and corrects developmental alterations, the shapes of the dental arches and the position of the jaws, in order to restore the morphological and functional balance of the mouth and face, improving also facial aesthetics.
Treatment
Orthodontic treatments can be INTERCEPTIVE or CORRECTIVE. The former try to avoid major alterations, while the latter achieve definitive results.
Interceptive treatment
Usually begins and ends during the primary or mixed dentition. They do not rule out the possibility of a later correction, before the appearance of another similar or different anomaly. This type of treatment is used regularly to correct abnormal habits, which can interfere with the regular growth pattern of the face and jaws.
Corrective treatment
When the interceptive treatment has not been performed, or has not been sufficient due to the nature of the malocclusion, then a corrective treatment is necessary. In this case, aimed at correcting a consolidated malocclusion. For corrective treatments, three types of devices are mainly used:
- Functional devices: these devices carry out functional modifications that lead to structural changes. They are also known as functional braces and have their most precise indication during primary or mixed dentition.
- Removable appliances: these appliances are commonly known as “plates”. They are very useful for the expansion of the jaws, especially the upper jaw, especially for the correction of “cross bites” and slight crowding, when expansion is indicated. Also for very specific tooth movements.
- Fixed appliances: Fixed appliances have the ability to individually move each and every one of the teeth in any direction of space, providing solutions to problems of dental malposition and crowding, tooth rotation, gap closure, alignment of the smile.
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign treatment is a virtually invisible way to align teeth. Using advanced 3D computer imaging technology, the Invisalign system displays your complete treatment plan based on your Invisalign Doctor’s evaluation, from the initial position of your teeth to the final desired position. Clear aligners are custom made so your teeth move little by little.
Each aligner is worn for approximately 1-2 weeks before being replaced by the next, and the teeth gradually move toward the final projected position. The treatment time depends on your specific needs and will be determined by your Orthodontist.
How does Invisalign work?
Invisalign aligners move the teeth in a series of carefully controlled and programmed movements. Therefore, at each stage only the movement of certain teeth is allowed, following an Invisalign treatment plan for that particular stage.
How long does the Invisalign treatment last?
The duration of the treatment depends on its complexity and is generally comparable to that of traditional braces. The Orthodontic specialist can give you more detailed information.
